How to remind someone you love to drink water

You cannot be there every hour to say "have some water." But a small, kind nudge can be. Here is how to help without turning into a nag.

Why they forget

Busy people forget. Older adults often feel thirst less. People deep in work or caring for others put themselves last. It is rarely stubbornness.

What works better than telling them

A reminder in your own face and voice

TwoToTango was made for exactly this. You record a few seconds of yourself, and at the interval they choose it pops up on their phone or computer, with two buttons: I drank and Later. It feels like you looking out for them, even when you are not in the room.

How to record a good clip

  1. Keep it 3 to 6 seconds.
  2. Stand in front of a plain background with good light on your face.
  3. Hold the phone steady, roughly square framing, head and shoulders.
  4. Say something short and warm: "Time for some water. Love you."
  5. The app can remove a plain white or green background, or cut you out of any background.

Getting it onto their device

Send them the download link for their phone or computer, help them upload the clip, and choose a gentle schedule together, for example every 90 minutes between 9 and 6. Let them move the reminder to a spot on the screen they like, and show them how to snooze it.

A gift that says you care

Because it is personal, it also makes a thoughtful small gift for a partner, parent, grandparent or long-distance friend. Set it up for them, then let them discover it.

Respect their choice

Ask first, and let them control it. A reminder they chose lasts. One forced on them gets switched off. If you are worried about someone's health, encourage them to see a doctor rather than relying on reminders alone.

Never forget again
