Drink water while you work: a desk routine that sticks
When you are in deep focus, hours can pass without a sip. A small routine fixes that without breaking your flow.
Set up your desk
- Fill a bottle or large glass at the start of the day and keep it in view.
- Use a bottle with a clear size so you can see progress. Two or three refills usually covers a workday.
- Keep a refill spot close, so a top-up takes seconds.
Pick the right interval
Every 60 to 90 minutes works for most people. Shorter intervals feel naggy; longer ones let thirst build. Set active hours so reminders stop at lunch if you want, and in the evening.
Use reminders that respect focus
- Choose a screen position out of the way, such as a corner.
- Pick one-tap actions: confirm you drank, or postpone 15 minutes.
- Snooze during meetings and presentations.
The Windows and Mac versions of TwoToTango sit in the tray or menu bar and pop up over your work only when it is time. On a Mac it even shows over full-screen apps.
Pair water with natural breaks
Drink when you finish a task, before a call, or after you send a long email. Pair it with a stretch or a look out of the window to rest your eyes.
Cut the afternoon slump
Mild dehydration can add to tiredness and headaches. A glass of water mid-afternoon is a cheap thing to try before another coffee.
Do not overdo it
Aim for steady sips, not big gulps. Your total need depends on you and your climate; see how much water to drink a day.
Never forget again
